Cromer RNLI announces its Christmas fundraising campaign

Lifeboats News Release

On 4 November the Cromer RNLI bedtime stories series will be launched.

The volunteer crew at Cromer RNLI have been busy recording their bedtime stories series to help raise vital funds for the station to support their lifesaving work.

The crew have been filmed at sea while on training, and on location around both the all-weather lifeboat (ALB) and inshore lifeboat (ILB) station, and on the lifeboats, bringing to life popular children’s bedtime stories for its supporters to share with their families.

The idea came from one of the crew Emma Tuck, who works at a local school. Emma said: ‘We were doing some bedtime stories at the school, and it gave me an idea to do something with our crew.

'I thought our crew dressed in their famous yellow crew kit narrating a story would be a unique and fun way to engage the children in reading, and also to learn more about our live saving volunteer crew.

‘I asked our Coxswains Paul and Danny if they could read a story from the lifeboat in their yellows. We watched the first one and all thought it was brilliant! And so the idea was born to involve the crew and create a fundraiser for the station’

Paul Watling, Coxswain and mechanic, said; ‘ I thought it was such an inspiring and original idea and wanted to share it with all our supporters. It creates a unique way to raise vital lifesaving funds for our station. I am so grateful to Emma for bringing the idea to us and starting our journey to create our Cromer RNLI bedtime stories series.

‘The crew have all been fantastic in agreeing to getting involved and being filmed at various locations in and around the station and lifeboats. I would love to see this go viral and bring happiness to lots of families and raise money for the station’.

The first story to launch the fundraiser is read by Polly Clarke - the station’s volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager and part of the shore crew.

The stories will be released weekly via Facebook starting Saturday 4 November.

Key facts about Cromer RNLI

The Cromer Lifeboat Station was established in 1804 and was not taken over by the Institution from the Norfolk Shipwreck Association until 1857. Since 1923 there have been two lifeboats at Cromer, and currently there is a D Class inshore boat and Tamar all-weather lifeboat. The outstanding figure in the history of Cromer is Henry George Blogg who became a member of the Cromer crew in 1894 at the age of 18. He was coxswain from 1909-1947. During his 53 years as a lifeboat crew member, the Cromer lifeboats had been on service 387 times and rescued 873 lives. His record is without equal in the history of the Institution. No lifeboat crew member has received so many decorations for gallantry.
