Beaumaris lifeboat launched when a EPIRB activated near Puffin Island.
At 12.23 pm on Sunday the 21 May 2023, the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from the H.M. Coastguard relating to an EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) that had activated near Puffin Island.
The Beaumaris Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington with her volunteer crew launched at 12.29 pm and proceeded to cover the indicated area in the meantime the H.M. Coastguard relayed a Mayday to all vessels in the vicinity of Puffin Island.
The Penmon Mobile Coastguard team was also tasked to the incident having to travel from their current location at Menai Bridge back to Penmon.
In the meantime, the Coastguard had managed to contact the owner of the personal location beacon and he confirmed that all was well with him and the child aboard the fishing vessel.
The lifeboat arrived shortly after and conferred with the owner to confirm that it was a false activation of the beacon. The Coastguard then thanked all vessels that had responded to the Mayday relay which included the Moelfre Lifeboat which was on an exercise.
The lifeboat arrived back at Beaumaris, at 12.55 pm to be refuelled and cleaned, once this had been completed the crew left the station at 1.40 pm.
A RNLI spokesperson said, ‘We would like to thank the other vessels that also responded to the Mayday relay, fortunately in this instance no further action was necessary’.
