Holyhead RNLI Assist Sailor With Head Injury
Holyhead RNLI volunteers were called out on Wednesday evening (May 10) after reports of a sailor suffering a head injury on board his vessel within Holyhead harbour.
Pagers sounded at 7pm, with HM Coastguard requesting the launch of the D-class inshore lifeboat
Mary and Archie Hooper. The crew were already at the lifeboat station for training, so four volunteers immediately launched the lifeboat and headed to the scene, just a few short minutes away.
On reaching the area, it was found that the local pilot boat was already on scene, with one crew member on board helping the injured man. Two lifeboat volunteers were immediately placed aboard the casualty vessel, and took over the care of the man, to carry out a casualty care assessment and treatment. The man’s injury had been caused by the main boom from the vessel coming into contact with his head, knocking him unconscious for a short period of time, and causing him to fall onto the aft deck of the craft.
The casualty was given oxygen while his wound was treated, and he was then made safe for the transfer ashore, and taken back to the lifeboat station to await the arrival of the North Wales Ambulance Service. He was then transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, to be assessed for any further treatment.
The lifeboat was then washed and made ready for any further calls by 8.30pm.
Lifeboat Operations Manager at Holyhead David Owens said:
'We wish the casualty well for a swift recovery, and send our thanks to the pilot boat crew for attending so quickly to assist him.'
