Porthdinllaen RNLI called out to kayaker in difficulties
Porthdinllaen RNLI all-weather lifeboat was tasked on Wednesday afternoon (3 May) by HM Coastguard to assist a lone kayaker in difficulties near Porthdinllaen point.
The lifeboat was launched at 12:15 pm, with Coxswain Owain Williams at the helm and a compliment of Volunteer Crew and were on scene in a matter of minutes. It was found that casualty, using an inflatable kayak had been caught in a strong ebbing tide off Carrreg Ddu on Porthdinllaen Point, and was unable to make their way back to the safety of Morfa Nefyn Bay. The casualty, who was wearing a lifejacket, was brought onto the lifeboat along with his kayak. He was then checked over by the lifeboat`s casualty care trained team. On arrival at Bwlch in Morfa Nefyn Bay he was handed over to care of the local Coastguard team.
Ken Fitzpatrick, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthdinllaen said:
'We urge anybody that ventures out to sea on any type of craft, to always check the local weather conditions and know the limitations of your craft, and to always wear a lifejacket. Also, inform a relative of friend ashore, what your plans are and when you expect to be back ashore and have a means of alerting others that you require assistance, be it a mobile phone or vhf marine radio and flares.
'Our thanks also to the local Coastwatch team on Porthdinllaen Headland who observed the casualty and provided us with invaluable information of his location.'
