Blackpool RNLI celebrate as long-standing volunteer turns 80
A long-standing crew member from Blackpool RNLI, Bernard Pickard, will be celebrating his 80th birthday in early May.
Bernard, who joined Blackpool RNLI station in 1969 as Shore Crew will be celebrating his 80th birthday this week. When Bernard joined the Lifeboat team, the Shore crew back then was referred to as Sidesman. For over 50 years, he continued to respond to his pager to assist and help the Blackpool launch their lifeboats.
Bernard took on the role of Head Launcher in the 1980’s, looking after the shore personnel and taking charge of operations connected with the launch and recovery of the lifeboat. This included driving the tractor and Land Rover. He is a well-respected member of Blackpool Lifeboat team and still takes part in most of the fundraising events. Bernard continues to support, maintain records and vital information during every training exercise and rescues. His nick name was ‘Statto’ as he was a human computer and knew all the rescues and statistics for Blackpool Station from his little black book.
David Warburton, RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager for Blackpool said:
‘On behalf of everyone at Blackpool lifeboat station, I would like to wish Bernard all the very best on his 80th. Bernard has been an integral part of the station for over 50 years and so deserves to celebrate this milestone birthday!’
