Volunteers from Bangor RNLI assist sea swimmer who becomes unwell
Volunteers from Bangor RNLI were involved in coming to the aid of a sea swimmer who became unwell at Brompton Pier last night (Wednesday 21 June).
At 11.31pm, Bangor RNLI received details of a swimmer experiencing health difficulties at Brompton Pier from HM Coastguard which requested the immediate launch of their Atlantic 85 class lifeboat.
The sea was calm and visibility was good at the time of launching.
The volunteer crew were on scene at 11.45pm to assist Bangor Coastguard and assess the situation. The casualty had been swimming with friends when they became unwell but had managed to make it safely back to shore where the Coastguard were in attendance.
The lifeboat tied up against the pier and the crew went ashore to provide assistance.
Whilst waiting for an ambulance, the casualty was attended to by a local doctor. The lifeboat crew provided casualty care and assisted with the transfer to the care of the ambulance crew a short time later.
Speaking following the call out, Bangor RNLI Helm John Bell said: ‘We were glad to assist this evening and would like to wish the casualty a speedy recovery. We would like to thank our colleagues from the Coastguard and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service who we worked closely with ashore to provide immediate support and casualty care.’
The lifeboat was returned to the station and made ready for service at 1am this morning (Thursday).
