Lifeboats News Release

Usually it is son's following father's into the RNLI but at Whitstable Lifeboat Station the trend was reversed after John Keam joined the station following in the footsteps of his son Mike, a fact that was highlighted at the weekend following the presentation of Certificates of Service to the pair.

Whitstable Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Judge said “Mike joined the station in 2004 and completed service as Crew and then Helmsman”.

“His father, John, joined in 2012 and was on the shore crew as a launch vehicle operator throughout his service and between them they accrued over 25 years of volunteering”.

“In a day and age when the pressures of life provide little time for things outside of family and work, it is remarkable and to their credit that were able to provide such a long period of support”.

“We wish them and the family well in the future and hope to keep in contact through their continued boating activities locally”.

Whitstable RNLI Lifeboat Station was established in 1963 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and is one of 237 lifeboat stations around the shores of the UK and Ireland. The volunteer crews provide a maritime search and rescue service for the Kent coast. They cover the area between the Kingsferry Bridge on the Swale, in the west, around the south-eastern side of Sheppey and along the coast through Whitstable and Herne Bay to Reculver in the east and outwards into the Thames Estuary.

The station is equipped with an Atlantic 85 lifeboat named Lewisco, purchased through a bequest of a Miss Lewis of London who passed away in 2006.

She is what is known as a rigid inflatable inshore lifeboat, the boat’s rigid hull being topped by an inflatable sponson. She carries a crew of four people.
