The volunteers from across the station plan to go the extra mile, covering over 3 miles a day, from the lifeboat station to the summit of the 187m high North Berwick Law, and back again and are asking for sponsorship through the RNLI’s Mayday campaign fundraising website.

Laura Anderson, the Chair of the North Berwick and Gullane RNLI Fundraising Branch said: ‘The Mayday Mile is a great way to get out and enjoy the spring whilst helping to raise vital lifesaving funds. In 2021, the average cost to train a volunteer crew member was £1400, which allows them to help save lives at sea, including 506 lives across the UK and RoI in 2022 so you know your money is having an impact.’

The RNLI is asking supporters to take on the Mayday Mile; a challenge of covering a mile a day for the month of May. All money raised will help to provide the vital training and equipment that is needed to keep RNLI lifesavers safe, while they risk their own lives to save others.

Whether you choose to walk, jog, hop or skip the Mayday Mile, your participation will help RNLI lifesavers continue their lifesaving work. Sign up at RNLI.org/SupportMayday

A view of North Berwick Law from the lifeboat station was captured by Jack Lowe, a travelling photographer with the mission of capturing all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations with his Victorian era camera back in 2019.

Jack said “When I make the crew portraits, I always try and incorporate as much context as possible so that anybody seeing the photograph can immediately place it.

‘One of the first things that struck me when I arrived at North Berwick RNLI was how the lifeboat station buildings are nestled within the town — they’re part of the fabric. So, I wanted to reflect that in the final photograph. It was great fun to make and, like the RNLI itself, very much the product of a successful team effort!”

Limited edition prints of Jack’s work are available on his Lifeboat Station Project website.
