Tasking received by Beaumaris Lifeboat to a vessel aground and on fire.
At 10.28 pm on Saturday 15 April 2023, the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from the U.K. Coastguard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Holyhead relating to a yacht reported aground and on fire near Church Island in the Menai Straits.
The local Mobile Coastguard team at Bangor together with the Penmon Mobile Coastguard team had also been tasked. With the close proximity of the casualty to the base of the Bangor team they quickly reported that the craft was the same as one previously reported on the rocks a few days previously when she had broken free from her moorings in the high winds.
In addition they advised that due to the low tide the boat could be reached from the shore and that on one was aboard.
In view of this information the lifeboat was asked to wait on her trailer at the shore line as her presence may not be required. This was confirmed and the Coastguard teams together with the North Wales Fire and Rescue services would deal with this incident.
Consequently, in this instance the lifeboat did not need to be refuelled and cleaned. Thus, enabling the volunteer crew to depart the station by 11.15 pm.
A RNLI spokesman said, ‘A fire onboard any vessel is particularly dangerous and the sooner the emergency services get to the incident the better, fortunately in this instance our presence was ultimately not required.’
