Beaumaris Lifeboat tasked to a motor vessel reported on fire
At 12.54 pm on Easter Saturday 8 April 2023, the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from the U.K. Coastguard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Holyhead relating to a 36-foot motorboat with reported to be on fire in the Menai Straits.
The vessel with two crew aboard was located between Plas Menai and Portdinorwic and was unable to stop her engines turning due to damaged caused by the fire. In the event it was a small electrical fire, and the boat was under tow by another vessel when the lifeboat arrived.
The lifeboat escorted the vessels to the marine wall at Portdinorwic. Once satisfied that the fire was extinguished two of the volunteer lifeboat crew boarded the vessel and managed to isolate the fuel supply to the engines.
The fire service also attended and ensured that the fire was fully extinguished.
Once this was confirmed the craft was taken to a mooring by Portdinorwic.
Once this had been completed the lifeboat was released by the coastguard to return to her station.at Beaumaris returning at 3.10 pm to be refuelled and cleaned. Once this had been completed the crew left the station.
A RNLI spokesman said, ‘the crew aboard the vessel did the correct thing in requesting assistance immediately as a fire aboard a vessel at sea can quickly develop into a major incident, fortunately in this incident the onboard fire extinguishers managed to stop this electrical fire from spreading.’
