Triplet trebles fundraising target
Walmer RNLI supporter has head shaved to raise funds.
On Friday evening, 31 March, local supporter Rachel Tappenden braved the drizzly weather to have her head shaved to help raise vital funds for the RNLI. Triplet Rachel, surrounded by her friends, family, lifeboat volunteers and coastguards attended the station where she had her head shaved by stylists from The Cutting Room in Deal, her first haircut for over 15 years. Initially aiming to raise £500, she has currently raised an amazing £1892, more than trebling her target.
The hair is being donated to the Little Princess Trust which provides free real hair wigs to children and adults up to the age of 24 who have lost their hair through cancer treatments and other conditions.
Rachel, whose husband also volunteers at Deal Coastguard, has been volunteering for over 12 years at Deal Sea Scouts as an assistant Beaver leader and also helps out with Explorers during the boating season. She said, ‘As a keen kayaker and sailor of small dinghies, I chose the lifeboat as I have lived in Deal and Walmer for most of my life and have seen the amazing job the RNLI do in keeping boaters and kayakers safe along the coast. I believe these volunteers carry out an essential emergency service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, acting without expectations.’
