Lions club treasurer Fiona Page said “The money was raised from the proceeds of our by-monthly quiz which was attended by around 85 people and held in the Masonic Lodge in Cromwell Road and £500 was raised on the evening following which, the club voted to increase the amount to £1000 from our funds. We have been running quizzes in aid of charitable causes for over 12-years and have recently made donations to the Air Ambulance and the Food Bank”.

Mike Judge, Whitstable lifeboat operations manager said “Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club have been regular supporters of the lifeboat for several years and once again we thank them for their efforts on our behalf and to those who attended their quiz”.

“The cash will go towards training expenses, equipment for the crew and station and fuel for the lifeboat.”

Whitstable lifeboat has so far been launched on 32 calls so far this year.

Notes to editors

Whitstable RNLI Lifeboat Station was established in 1963 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and is one of 237 lifeboat stations around the shores of the UK and Ireland. The volunteer crews provide a maritime search and rescue service for the Kent coast. They cover the area between the Kingsferry Bridge on the Swale, in the west, around the south-eastern side of Sheppey and along the coast through Whitstable and Herne Bay to Reculver in the east and outwards into the Thames Estuary.

The station is equipped with an Atlantic 85 lifeboat named Lewisco, purchased through a bequest of a Miss Lewis of London who passed away in 2006.

She is what is known as a rigid inflatable inshore lifeboat, the boat’s rigid hull being topped by an inflatable sponson. She carries a crew of four people.
