RNLI Torbay crew complete skydive, the first of six ‘Kilimanjaro ‘23’ fund raising Challenges.
All nine members of RNLI Torbay’s Skydive team landed safely after completing their first Kilimanjaro Challenge last Sunday 22nd May, at Dunkeswell airfield.
The day started with short briefing, which everyone listened to rather carefully, learned what not to do, how to pose and what skydiving jargon to use for the camera. They donned Aviators and their gear, boarded the plane, took off and climbed above the clouds… where they meatbombed at 15,000 feet, freefell for 60 seconds, opened canopies and swooped gracefully through the final 5,000 feet to the DZ back at Dunkeswell airfield. A crowd of well-wishers, friends and family welcomed them all back to terra firma with loud whoops of congratulations and requests for autographs.
“What was it like?” asked one over-awed onlooker... “Bonkers!” came Barney’s reply.
“Would you do it again?” … “Absolutely!”
Back at the station, Skydiving team leader Darryl Farley, reverently handed over the Kili flag to Cridds, team leader for the next Challenge – the Six Island Cycle! … “Take special care of it!” he rasped with a firm handshake and steely look in his eye.
