Cullercoats RNLI assist grounded vessel

Lifeboats News Release

Cullercoats Lifeboat crew were paged at 4:53pm on Sunday 12th July to reports of a vessel needing assistance that had run around on Tynemouth Longsands

The lifeboat crew made RNLB Hylton Burdon ready for service and launched with four crew on board to locate the casualty. The 5 metre vessel had suffered engine failure and was hard aground on Tynemouth Longsands. The lifeboat crew made best speed towards the scene and, once close enough, two crew members waded ashore. Members of Blyth Coastguard and two RNLI Lifeguards were also on hand to assist.

While the lifeboat crew members attached a tow and pushed the vessel safely off the beach, the RNLI Lifeguards ferried the 3 casualties, including a child, to the lifeboat using their smaller rescue craft. Once a safe transfer had taken place, the RNLI Lifeguards returned to the beach and the lifeboat continued to tow the casualty vessel to Royal Quays Marina, where they were met once again by Blyth Coastguard.

Once the casualties were safely on dry land again and their vessel was secure, the lifeboat crew returned to station where the lifeboat was washed down and made ready for service once again.
