Newquay RNLI volunteers rescue sisters after kayak capsize
Newquay RNLI crew responded in the charity's D class inshore lifeboat on Wednesday (5 June) and rescued two sisters in their 20s, stranded on a rock after their kayak capsized in Newquay Bay.
Newquay's RNLI volunteers were called out at 3.15pm after a member of the public on cliffs near the Huer's Hut called 999 for the Coastguard, to report two people shouting for help from rocks just offshore.
The two women in their early 20s were rescued from the Inner Dane rock by the RNLI crew and were landed safely at the harbour within ten minutes of the lifeboat launching, where they were met by members of Newquay Coastguard.
The sisters from Somerset were treated for minor cuts, but were otherwise unhurt and one of them contacted the lifeboat station later and said: 'We both feel very lucky and are so grateful to the lifeboat crew, who were amazing. Thank you. It could have been a lot worse'.
The RNLI advises anyone going out onto the water to carry a means of calling for help, and if you're on the coast and see someone in difficulties, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
