Moelfre and Holyhead Lifeboats Launched to Aid Fishing Vessel in Trouble.
At 11:53am on Friday 19th July Moelfre all-weather lifeboat Kiwi, launched after being tasked by UK Coastguard that a 16-metre fishing trawler with two persons on board had suffered steering problems, 23 miles North East of Moelfre.
After the long journey in poor conditions, the Moelfre RNLI volunteers located the casualty vessel and a tow line was passed over. Once the tow was established, Kiwi then made steady progress towards home.
In the meantime, the RNLI volunteers from one of our flanking stations Holyhead, were also paged to assist in getting the casualty vessel to a safe mooring in Holyhead Harbour. At 5:10pm Holyhead lifeboat Christopher Pearce took over the tow from Moelfre lifeboat Kiwi, with an ebbing tide near Church Bay, an area with the most sea room.
The Holyhead volunteers then towed the casualty vessel to Holyhead Harbour and at the same time, the RNLI volunteer crew of Moelfre steered for home. Kiwi was back on the slip at Moelfre at 6:20pm and was prepared and ready for service at 7:15pm. The volunteer crew of our RNLI flanking station in Holyhead, secured the casualty vessel on a safe mooring in Holyhead Harbour. Holyhead lifeboat Christopher Pearce was again ready for service at 7:30pm.
