Filey Lifeboat Weekend 2019
Filey RNLI Lifeboat weekend for 2019 will start on the afternoon of Friday 2nd August and continue on both Saturday 3rd August and Sunday 4th August.
A fun-filled programme of events is promised over the three days with, hopefully, something for every member of the family to enjoy and help raise funds directly for Filey Lifeboat. The all-weather lifeboat out on display from early morning on Friday until late afternoon Sunday.
The activities start with an afternoon tea being held in the boathouse from 1pm Friday. Members of the crew will be on hand to act as waiters serving teas in traditional cups and saucers and scones with jam and cream. Tickets always sell like hot cakes (!!) so if you would like to spend time in the boathouse enjoying a cream tea and gazing out to sea, then tickets will be available at our shop on Coble Landing. Our summer raffle tickets will also be on sale. Hopefully, there will be live music from a group of folk singers to entertain everyone.
The annual raft race, this year, will take place on the Saturday afternoon from about 3pm and teams are encouraged to enter. There will be two classes of entry. Contact the boathouse for details. A completely new event for Lifeboat weekend will be held beforehand: “wellie-wanging” on the beach with prizes to the adult and junior who can throw a wellie the furthest. This event will run from about 11am to 2pm. There will also be a static display by the White Rose Goldwings Motorcycle group who will run a tombola at the boathouse on Coble Landing. Lifeboat souvenirs will be on sale as well as second-hand books. And summer raffle tickets. Hopefully Stormy Stan will also be on scene for photographs. In the morning we hope to have a performance from The Ramshackle Shantymen.
The main event on Sunday will be the launching of both lifeboats around 1.30pm. This is a spectacle always worth watching as well as the recovery of the all-weather lifeboat around 4.30pm. Dearne Valley Big Band will be there to play a musical selection. Magic Mike will be on hand on Coble Landing to entertain children (and adults) of all ages. Other emergency services will provide static displays along with Filey Rotary’s Human Fruit Machine. There will also be a static display of trial bikes. There will be a massive tombola, summer raffle tickets, craft and book stalls, souvenirs, a selection of games as well as the chance for youngsters to “throw the ball in the RNLI helmet”; all of which will take place at the lifeboat station.
David Wilson, Chairman of Filey RNLI said: “The RNLI relies solely on donations from the public and every penny that we raise on Lifeboat weekend will go directly towards the running of Filey Lifeboat Station. With our beautiful coastline, recognised by The Sunday Times as the best beach in England 2019, and good Yorkshire hospitality, it promises to be three fantastic days for all the family. We look forward to good weather this year and plenty of visitors to help Filey Lifeboat”
