Moelfre RNLI Volunteers Dash to Rescue Children in Peril
RNLI Moelfre Inshore Lifeboat launched just before 16:30 today, to reports of an adult and children being blown out to sea off Benllech beach.
The Moelfre Coastguard team made their way to the beach and the RNLI Moelfre crew had the casualties under observation from the boathouse, until the Inshore Lifeboat Enfys2 arrived on scene. Upon arrival the casualties had drifted over half of a mile off the beach, with the 25 knot offshore winds. The crew found one adult and four children in two kayaks, one of which was an inflatable. Shaken but un-harmed, the five occupants were checked over and taken back to the awaiting coastguard team, who gave adequate safety advice and helped by providing blankets to warm them up.
The ILB then returned to station and was made ready for service again.
RNLI Volunteer Inshore Lifeboat Helm Dwynwen Parry explained:
“The beach is there to be enjoyed by all, but the water although appealing, is still very cold and dangerous without the right equipment. Inflatables are considered very dangerous in offshore winds, especially if they are not secured. Luckily this group was seen by an eagle-eyed onlooker and the alarm was quickly raised”
If you do unexpectedly end up in the water remember the RNLI 5 steps to float:
1. Fight your instinct to thrash around.
2. Lean back, extend your arms and legs.
3. If you need to, gently move your arms and legs to help you float.
4. Float until you can control your breathing.
5. Only then, call for help, or swim to safety.
