RNLI Mayday Coastal Challenge
Over one hundred people took part in the third RNLI Mayday Coastal Challenge on Saturday, walking up to 15 miles between North Queensferry and Kinghorn, and raising over £5,000 in the process to help kit our lifeboat crews.
The Mayday Coastal Challenge was jointly hosted by Kinghorn and Aberdour RNLI fundraising branches. The walk started at North Queensferry and finished at Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Station. The challenge followed the Fife Coastal Path, with three intermediate start points along the way.
Mayday is the RNLI’s yellow-themed annual fundraiser, which runs from 1-31 May. It’s a celebration of our volunteer lifeboat crews, who are on call 24 hours a day, every day, to save lives at sea.
The event aims to raise £750,000 nationally to buy protective clothing for volunteer lifeboat crews.
Sheona Smith, Kinghorn fundraising committee Chairperson, said, ‘We were delighted with the support we received. Over 100 walkers took on the challenge with over 80 completing the full walk from North Queensferry to Kinghorn Lifeboat Station in spectacular weather.
The event raised over £5,000 which is fantastic. This will help buy new kit for our brave volunteers. It is essential that our crews are warm and dry and ready for the worst weather mother nature can throw at them.
‘I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the event as well as all our supporters who helped run the event along with our colleagues from Aberdour fundraising branch.
‘The event was also supported by the local partner teams, including RNLI Lifeguards and Kinghorn Coastguard Rescue Team. The 15-mile walk began at the Harbour Light Tower with registration taking place in the yard of Calypso Marine; we are very grateful to them for clearing their yard for the day and making us so welcome.
‘We now begin preparing for our annual open day, which will be held on Saturday 30th June.’
