Soapy day for Walmer volunteers
Residents of Walmer and Deal turn out to help raise vital funds for the RNLI.
Volunteers from Walmer RNLI armed themselves with buckets and sponges as part of the organisation’s annual Mayday Fundraising campaign at the station’s car wash on Saturday.
Now in its fifth year, all the money raised will go to the RNLI to be spent on lifesaving training for the crew and much needed equipment.
The volunteers, aiming to beat last year’s record of 127 cars, began their marathon at 10 am and were kept busy by a steady stream of vehicles, including HM Coastguard, until 3pm when the last one was washed and dried.
Speaking after the event, sponsor and Walmer helmsman Dan Sinclair said ‘I’d like to thank all of you who gave up your time today. Everyone has worked extremely hard from crew members on the washing and drying to our team of shop volunteers and helpers who kept up our energy levels with a regular supply of drinks, cakes and sandwiches.’
He added ‘Thanks too should go to the people of Walmer and Deal who brought their cars. We beat our previous record by cleaning 136 cars and raised £1540.41 for the RNLI’

Key facts about the RNLIThe Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 237 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.
The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
