In a moderate sea Deputy Second Coswain Tony Radcliffe took the all-weather lifeboat, Sir William Hillary, out of Douglas harbour to conduct a shoreline search northwards from Douglas as far as Groudle and back.

With mist and rain making visibility difficult the search concentrated for a while around Derby Castle and Port Jack with the lifeboat crew manning all of the lifeboat's search lights, and deploying parachute flares. Then it was while the lifeboat crew continued their search passing Happy Valley towards Groudle that the call came from the Coastguard at 4.50am that the lifeboat could be stood down to return to harbour.
