Blyth RNLI meet up with anglers in the Northumberland Puffin Kayak competition
Volunteer crew from Blyth RNLI met up with competitors whilst out on exercise in Blyth Bay and used it as an awareness opportunity for both parties.
The third annual Northumberland Puffin Kayak competition took place on the 2 June 2018 with competitors travelling from far and wide to compete in the event.
The event had been originally postponed due to the bad weather.
It saw the anglers meet at the Bandstand at Blyth beach before heading out to sea and in the Blyth Bay area.
Irene Hodgson one of the organisers, said, 'We were pleased to see yet another great turn out from not only the North East kayak anglers, but seeing competitors from Scotland and Derbyshire. Once the safety briefing was given, everyone launched and headed out to fish some of the best rough ground on the Northumberland coast. A brilliant day on the water seeing all competitors catching fish with the added bonus of the Blyth RNLI boat calling round to see us, and who later joined us at the prize giving. After all the fish had been weighed in it was time to announce the winner, the winning fish was caught by John Kent from Newcastle. huge well done to all who took part and a massive thank you to all our sponsors who give so generously allowing every penny raised to be donated to Blyth RNLI Lifeboat Station.'
It was an opportunity for the local RNLI Community Safety Officer, Julie Robertson to meet with the competitors and give them some safety information as part of the charity's Respect The Water campaign which was well received.
Julie Robertson said, 'We are extremely grateful for the support and kind donation from the wonderful organisers and competitors of the 2018 Northumberland Puffin Kayak Competition. A huge thank you also for allowing us the opportunity to spread our safety message, helping us save lives at sea.'
Volunteer crew from Blyth RNLI lifeboat station attended the prize giving ceremony at the end of the day to meet with the anglers and also pass on their thanks for the support the competitors had given to the RNLI.
