Baltimore RNLI launched after boat runs aground near Baltimore, west Cork
Baltimore RNLI launched at 9.10am this morning (Sunday 3 June), after a boat with two people on board ran aground up the river at Old Court near Baltimore in west Cork.
The volunteer lifeboat crew were requested by the Irish Coast Guard to go to the assistance of a 28 foot yacht with two people on board who had run aground trying to navigate the river Ilen near Old Court. At the time conditions were described as good but the tide was falling.
The Baltimore inshore lifeboat with three volunteer crew aboard, helm John Kearney and crew members Ian Lynch and David Ryan, arrived on scene at 9.27am. After assessing the situation and checking the area around the vessel for any further navigational hazards a tow was established and the yacht was pulled clear.
There was no apparent damage to the yacht and no injuries to anyone on board so they continued on their journey down the river and the lifeboat returned to station.
Slip crew present for the launch and recovery of the inshore lifeboat were Sean McCarthy, Jerry Smith and Colin Whooley. Also in attendance at the lifeboat station were Gerald O’Brien, Brian McSweeney, Micheal Cottrell, Kieran Collins and Pat O’Driscoll.
Speaking following the call out, Kate Callanan, Baltimore RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer said: ‘With the current good weather we would remind everyone taking to the sea or heading to coastal areas to respect the water. If you get into difficulty on the water or along the coast, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.’
