North Berwick RNLI lifeboat launch to Kayakers in difficulty near the Bass Rock
North Berwick RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) Lifeboat volunteer crew launched today (Tuesday 31 July) to reports of kayakers in difficulty near the Bass Rock.
North Berwick inshore lifeboat Evelyn M launched at 12.55 pm with a volunteer crew of four. They arrived on scene and commenced a search of the area. They located two twin sit on kayaks with four persons on board heading for the beach at Seacliff.
The off shore wind was making it difficult for the kayakers. However they were all wearing buoyancy aids, had a mobile phone with them for emergencies and had a person watching them from the shore. North Berwick Lifeboat waited until they made it ashore before being stood down by the Coastguard. They were back at North Berwick by 1.30pm.
It is important that if you think someone is in difficulty at sea to call 999 and request the Coastguard. North Berwick Lifeboat Press Officer said “Time can be critical so do not hesitate to report any concerns to the coastguard by calling 999. The lifeboat can then be sent to investigate.”
