65 years of voluntary work with the RNLI recognised with an award
Dr Reginald Carr was the guest of honour at the Blyth Lifeboat Station where his voluntary work with the RNLI was the focus of the evening.
Voluntary Crew past and present were amongst the friends and family of Dr Carr who had gathered to say 'Thank You' for the work and commitment he had shown in supporting the RNLI over the past 65 years.
The evening started with the current Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), Barry Pearson welcoming everyone to Blyth RNLI and then introduced recently retired LOM, John Scott who then explained to everyone,Dr Carr's involvement with the RNLI and the roles that he had held within the Station at Blyth.
Simon Ling, Regional Operation Policy Manager for the RNLI, then addressed the audience on behalf of the Charity and said, 'It was an incredible occasion and I was delighted to be asked to attend the presentation evening.Dr Carr is an inspiration to all of us in the RNLI and it was an honour and privilege to present him with his award in recognition of his service.'
Dr Carr aged 90, then addressed the audience and talked about his time with the RNLI and that he first become attached due to his family, as his father was a harbour pilot and sea captain and his mother a member of the Ladies Guild. He thanked everyone for his award and said that his time in the RNLI had been most interesting.'
Dr Carr had been involved with the RNLI in Blyth since 1953 and as well as undertaking the work of Station Medical Officer, which involved him going out on many shouts, his RNLI career in Blyth has included the roles of Secretary,Chairman and President.
In 2014 Dr Carr was recognised by the RNLI for his efforts when he was bestowed with the title of Honorary Life Governor of the Institution and in 2016 recognised in the New Years Honours list when he received an MBE for over 60 years voluntary work with the RNLI.
Barry Pearson Blyth RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, commented, 'Blyth RNLI have a lot to thank Dr Carr for and we hope that the presentation evening has shown how much he is valued as part of this Station. From myself and the crew we hope that he enjoys his retirement from the RNLI and is always welcome to come back and visit us.'
