Help Barry Dock RNLI save lives at sea without getting wet
Barry Dock RNLI is issuing its own call for help as it looks for a new volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer to join the station team.
Anyone taking up the role will help Barry Dock RNLI’s crew of volunteers save more lives at sea by bringing its lifesaving work to the attention of the public.
The Lifeboat Press Officer will build relationships with local media, keeping the community informed of operational activity by promoting newsworthy rescues and lifeboat station events.
Martin Bowmer, Coxswain at Barry Dock RNLI, said: ‘Just as the RNLI relies on volunteers to crew its lifeboats, we also rely on a network of volunteers nationally to tell the media about what we do, and there is a direct link between promoting our work and raising the funds needed to maintain our 24/7 search and rescue service.
‘You do not have to have had any formal media or communications experience as such, or to have performed a similar role before, you just need to be enthusiastic and willing to learn. The RNLI’s Media Engagement team will provide all the training and support needed, and there will be someone from the RNLI available on the phone 24/7 to provide help and guidance.

The volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer role will likely take up between one and five hours a week, depending on operational activity, so can be managed around the right candidate’s own commitments.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 238 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree.
