Blue Light Event at Barmouth RNLI
There was lots of excitement and enthusiasm at the RNLI Boathouse on the promenade in Barmouth on Saturday 6th August when all the local Emergency Services joined forces to hold their annual ‘Blue Light Day’.
Organised by PCSO David Hughes there were stalls, displays and demonstrations from North Wales Police, HM Coastguard, South Snowdonia Search and Rescue, Air Ambulance, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Welsh Hearts/Calonnau Cymru and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Each organisation came together to show the general public the important role they play and to provide information about our emergency services in an entertaining, interactive and informative manner.
During the fun-packed afternoon children were allowed to sit in a real fire engine and try on the helmets. One of the highlights was a display by North Wales Police of the use of drones. Operated under strict regulations, they are used in the search for missing persons, road traffic incidents and their use proved invaluable in the recent gorse fires in North Wales.
Nick Aitken of the Heart Charity Welsh Hearts/Calonnau Cymru explained the use of defibrillators and gave CPR demonstrations where children were invited to join in under supervision. South Snowdonia Search and Rescue team representatives explained how to stay safe in the hills, and HM Coastguard displayed their mud rescue equipment. Members of Barmouth RNLI were present and the RNLI’s Respect the Water Community Safety Officer was on hand to give information and advice of how to stay safe in our coastal waters.
Altogether it was a very successful day and a great example of what can be achieved when public sector partners join forces in an effective safety campaign.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives.
