Abersoch in joint exercise with Porthdinllaen Lifeboat
Abersoch and Porthdinllaen Lifeboats undertook a joint exercise in Bardsey Sound and Aberdaron Bay on August 1.
Abersoch’s Atlantic 85 and Porthdinllaen’s Tamar class lifeboats operate in neighbouring areas, and recently have been called to a number of shouts together. In such situations, it is useful for neighbouring stations to have experience and knowledge as well as a good working relationship with neighbouring stations, to ensure the high standard of operations continues in a multi station call out.
The crews proceeded to Bardsey Sound, where Porthdinllaen lifeboat set up an astern tow of the Atlantic 85, towing the Atlantic on a line behind the Tamar. The crew then proceeded to convert the tow to an alongside tow, bringing the Atlantic alongside the Tamar and setting up effective a web of lines to hold the Atantlic safe to the bow of the Tamar to allow a controlled alongside tow. This tow manoeuvre is often used to tow a vessel into a marina or harbour in a controlled manner and enable the lifeboat to place a vessel on a pontoon.
Following the completion of the manoeuvre the Tamar anchored in Aberdaron Bay and the Abersoch crew tied alongside to enable a viewing of the boat for familiarisation purposes.
Both Lifeboats returned to their respective stations following the three hour training exercise
