Newquay lifeboat volunteers launch to dog in the water
Newquay's RNLI lifeboat volunteers were requested to launch by UK Coastguard just after 5pm on Monday (9 April) to a dog in the sea on the eastern side of Towan Head.
There were concerns people might enter the water to attempt rescue.
The charity's D class inshore lifeboat launched with three crew and quickly found the dog in the sea below the War Memorial, but it had sadly died. The RNLI volunteers recovered the dog and returned to the lifeboat station at 5.30pm, where they were later met by the dog's owner.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Gareth Horner at Newquay RNLI says: 'We are sorry for the family's loss, but the father and son did the right thing by not going into the sea after their pet. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.'
Newquay Coastguard rescue team also responded to this call.
