Busy time at Ramsgate
The Ramsgate RNLI volunteer crew have experienced a busy period of just over 36 hours with their boats being launched a total of 5 times.
On 3 July at 7.21pm the RNLI’s Inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched at the request of the UK Coastguard to a dog cut off by the tide, below King George VI Park, Ramsgate. Having rescued the dog a crew member went ashore and reunited the unharmed dog with it’s owners who were waiting on the promenade. Having recovered their crew member the ILB returned to station.
On 4 July at 10.55am the ILB was again launched, this time to a small, single-handed local fishing boat with engine trouble one mile off Ramsgate. Once alongside the casualty, two ILB crew members went aboard to assist with lifting the anchor. The ILB crew then passed a line and towed the casualty safely into Ramsgate Harbour.
Later that day, at 2.25pm the RNLI’s all weather lifeboat (AWB) launched at the request of UK Coastguard to a motor boat taking in water off Broadstairs with two people on board. On scene the AWB managed to get one of our crew member aboard the casualty to assess the water ingress. As the forward cabin was deep with water, the AWB crew attempted to transfer the salvage pump to the casualty, but due to the sea conditions it was decided not to continue.
The RNLI crew member aboard the casualty ascertained that the water was coming in from the forward hatches and made an attempt to seal them up. The casualty then made its own way safely into Ramsgate Harbour escorted by the AWB. On approaching the harbour the ILB was requested as their pump was smaller and easier to transfer and operate in a limited space. Once in the harbour and alongside the lifeboat’s berth both pumps were used to remove as much water as possible and the casualty was able to make its own way to a berth on a pontoon.
At 7.48am today the ILB was again launched to assist a 5m angling boat with engine failure behind Ramsgate Harbour's north pier. The ILB crew took the fishing vessel in tow and brought it safely onto its berth in the harbour.
