Galway RNLI rescue man injured in fishing trawler on Galway Bay

The fisherman was working on a 30-metre trawler, five miles west of Salthill, when he injured his hand. The skipper of the vessel alerted the Irish Coast Guard who immediately sought the assistance of Galway RNLI which launched within 10 minutes from Galway Docks.

The volunteer lifeboat crew met the fishing trawler off the coast of Barna and the injured man was transferred on board where he was attended to by two RNLI first aiders. They treated the laceration, stopped the bleeding, sling-ed his arm, and prevented hypothermia.

The lifeboat crew then transported the man to Galway Docks where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Galway University Hospital.

Galway RN LI Helm Brian Niland said, 'this was a good outcome and thankfully conditions were calm and favourable.'

The other RNLI volunteer crew on this callout were Leanne McHugh, John O’Sullivan and Ian O’Gorman.
