Lifeboats News Release

Both of Penarth RNLI's lifeboats, crewed by volunteers, were launched shortly after 8.10pm on Thursday (7 December).

Night search for Penarth Atlantic Lifeboat

The alarm was raised when reports were received of cries for help being heard in the Cardiff Bay Barrage area.

Both lifeboats were launched, and crews took part in a large multia-gency search. The incident was also attended by HM Coastguard officers from Penarth, South Wales Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from St Athan.

Using a coordinated search approach, coincidentally practised on exercise early in the week, a thorough search was carried out in the barrage area extending south to Lavenock Point. With search conditions ideal, and nothing being found, the lifeboat crews were stood down on completion of their search patterns, the call being logged as a false alarm with good intent.
