British Empire Medal awarded to lifelong RNLI fundraiser
Margaret Driscoll's dedication to community projects and the RNLI were recognised earlier this year.
Over 60 years of fundraising for the RNLI, along with a dedication to a range of community projects in her home village of Burnmouth, culminated in Margaret Driscoll being awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, earlier this year.
As well as serving on the local village community council, Margaret has also been a lifelong supporter of the RNLI. This was recognised by the RNLI in 2010 when Margaret was made an Honorary Life Governor.When Margaret learned of the Honours List medal earlier this year she said; 'It came completely out of the blue, very much a surprise and of course, I am absolutely delighted. I don’t know if I deserve this as over the years, you just do what you enjoy doing really. I will continue to raise funds for the RNLI and help the local community council in anyway I can.'
Margaret was officially presented with her medal by Lord Lieutenant Jeanna Swan on Saturday 2 December 2017, in front of a packed crowd at Burnmouth Village Hall.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives.
