Llandudno lifeboat launches to assist single-handed yachtsman

The 29-foot sloop 'Esprit' with one man aboard had left Conwy the previous day. HM Coastguard became concerned for the safety of the lone sailor who was experiencing engine and deck-gear problems, and after the Coastguard helicopter Rescue 136 had confirmed his position and established radio contact, decided to call for lifeboat assistance.

Paged at 10:47am and launching shortly afterwards, Llandudno lifeboat met up with the sloop some six miles north-west of Great Orme's Head. With force 6 winds on scene forecast to increase and the impossibility of taking the yacht in tow to Conwy due to low tide conditions in the approach channels the casualty was instead taken to the shelter of Llandudno bay for both vessels to anchor and await the flood tide permitting entry into the River Conwy.

The vessel was taken into Conwy at 7pm and Llandudno all-weather lifeboat returned to station.
