Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers involved in late-night search after 999 call

Lifeboats News Release

Newquay's RNLI lifeboat volunteers responded at 10.15pm on Thursday (23 June) and searched for two people reported in difficulties 800m off the beach at North Fistral.

The RNLI team launched the charity's two inshore lifeboats and searched Fistral Bay in light north westerly winds, firing illuminating flares and putting a crew member ashore to speak to people on the beach and gather information, but nobody was found in difficulties.

At 10.50pm, Falmouth Coastguard confirmed that the 999-caller believed the people they had seen were two body-boarders who had since returned safely to the beach, allowing the RNLI crews to stand-down and return to the harbour.

RNLI volunteer deputy launching authority David Trebilcock said: 'On this occasion the call turned out to be a false alarm with good intent, but the member of the public did the right thing by calling the Coastguard on 999 to report their concerns for the pair's safety.'
