RNLI and Irish Coast Guard work together in callout to snorkeler in difficulty
Helvick RNLI's latest call out to a snorkeler in difficulty off Ardmore sadly ended in tragedy.
At approximately 4 p.m. on Sunday June 12 2016 Helvick RNLI lifeboat Robert Armstrong was tasked to the Whiting Bay area adjacent to Ardmore, Co. Waterford where a snorkeler was reported missing. The combined services of Helvick and Youghal RNLI together with Rescue Helicopter 117 from Waterford were in place within minutes of the call to service.
On arriving on-scene Helvick RNLI lifeboat initiated the search from the eastern side while Youghal Lifeboat took up the western side of the rescue area. Within minutes a casualty was located by the crew from Youghal RNLI. Rescue 117 Helicopter had arrived on scene at this point.
Helvick Lifeboat took on the task of receiving the winchman from the helicopter and transported him to Youghal Lifeboat, from where the casualty was winched to the helicopter and transferred to Waterford Regional Hospital. It was announced later that he did not survive his ordeal.
The RNLI wish to extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased.
