RNLI New Brighton hovercraft crew rescue two people and dog
Last night at 9:30pm New Brighton hovercraft H-005 Hurley Spirit with crew of four responded to a request for assistance by two people and dog cut off by the incoming tide on a sandbank off from Leasowe Lighthouse on the Wirral coast.
The couple were visiting the area enjoying the good weather and spending time with their 5 month old dog Daisy when they found themselves cut off by the incoming tide.
In this area the tide sweeps in quickly along gullies and you can be rapidly surrounded by water several hours before high tide. In this case it was about 3 hours before high tide at Liverpool so its vital to know the tide times and understand when you need to return to shore.
When our hovercraft reached the couple they were still on dry sand, taken on board the craft and dropped off at a nearby car park.
Graham Sale Lifeboat Operations Manager at New Brighton commented 'In this case all was well and the couple followed the instructions given to them by Coastguard. This brought to an end a busy day for the station as earlier in the evening our hovercraft and lifeboat were involved in a search off from Formby point for a missing child. The child was subsequently found safe on shore and our craft returned to base for wash down and refuel'
If you find yourself in difficulty on the coast or see someone apparently in trouble phone 999 and ask for Coastguard - they will alert the emergency services and if approprtiate the RNLI.
