Sunderland RNLI among host of emergency services called to Pier incident.

Lifeboats News Release

The volunteers from Sunderland RNLI were requested by UK Coastguard to go to the aid of a person in the water near Roker pier last night.

The Coastguard had received reports that a person believed to be a male was in difficulties on the south side of Roker pier. Sunderland’s ‘D Class’ Lifeboat; the smaller of the charity’s inshore boats was tasked as it is an ideal boat to get in shallow waters and close to structures like piers.
 
On arrival on scene it became apparent that the person had made their way out of the water and was now on the pier. Police, Coastguard and Ambulance crews were all in attendance and a Lifeboat crewman was put ashore to offer assistance.
 
The male had suffered a head injury and was treated at the scene; he was then transferred by ambulance to hospital.  
 
Gav Hughes Crewman at Sunderland RNLI said
 
‘Although we do not know how the person entered the water or gained his injuries he was thought to have been fishing on the pier, nationally it is recognised that a lot of people who end up in trouble never intended to enter the water, that is why the RNLI is encouraging people to ‘Resect the Water’ in the hope less people will drown around the UK’s coast.’
