Family affair for Moelfre RNLI's new kids on the block
Moelfre RNLI lifeboat station’s newest recruits Niall and his younger sister Georgia carry out their first lifeboat rescue together just minutes after successfully passing her essential crew assessment.
Georgia Hulston, from Moelfre, is the station's newest and youngest recruit at 17 years old.
Georgia followed in the footsteps of her older brother Niall and joined the lifeboat in June this year after showing a keen interest in volunteering for the RNLI charity. As part of the probationary training Georgia successfully completed her lifejacket and personal protective equipment assessments last Thursday (28 July).
And within minutes of completing the assessment the volunteer crew of Moelfre RNLI were alerted to reports of a lady in difficulty on an inflatable and a member of public in the water attempting recue.
An immediate launch of the Tamar class lifeboat Kiwi was requested and Georgia was soon donning her lifejacket for the first time in anger to form part of the team on-board.
Fortunately the people in difficulty made their own way to shore with the assistance of a passing kayaker upon the lifeboat's arrival. Once back on station Georgia and her fellow crew washed and prepared Kiwi ready for her next emergency call.
Moelfre RNLI Deputy Second Coxswain Martin Jones, who was on duty for the call-out, said: 'It’s admirable to see the younger generation so keen and showing an interest in the station and giving up their time to volunteer. It was an immediate launch with people reported in the water, so time was of the essence. Just minutes before the call, Georgia passed her lifejacket and personal protective equipment assessments with flying colours. She was the quickest, and the best dressed crew member on-board!’
Tomorrow (Saturday 6) Moelfre RNLI will be throwing its doors open to the public for the station's annual open day, where people can meet crew, look around the lifeboat, learn about the RNLI as watch displays of the lifeboat's capabilities.
