Beaumaris RNLI volunteers assist a broken-down speedboat
On Thursday 24 September the volunteer crew of the Beaumaris RNLI were arriving for a training session when at 5.48 pm, they received a request from HM Coastguard to a speedboat with two persons aboard by Penmon Point
The Beaumaris Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington with her volunteer crew, proceeded to the vessel. The two adults aboard had lifejackets on but no VHF radio, so communication with the Coastguard was via a mobile phone.
Once the lifeboat crew located the speedboat, they ensured that all was well with the two occupants of the vessel. Then an assessment was carried out by the lifeboat helm in consultation with the Coastguard, as to the best course of action to be taken.
It was decided that due to a fuel issue meaning the boat could not make headway itself, no other suitable craft having responded to the incident and with dusk rapidly approaching, together with the deteriorating weather conditions expected, the vessel would soon become a navigation hazard. Therefore, for safety reasons, the boat would be towed to the nearest available safe haven – this being the slip at Menai Bridge.
The Penmon Mobile Coastguard Team had been requested to assist and met the lifeboat at the slipway at Menai Bridge. Once this had been completed the lifeboat was released by the Coastguard to return to her station.
A RNLI spokesperson said: ‘The informant did the correct thing in alerting the Coastguard to the situation using their mobile phone to call for help. This meant our volunteer lifeboat crew were able to reach the location quickly and help out.’
