Lough Erne RNLI crews assist three people and a dog on Lower Lough Erne

Lifeboats News Release

At 11:56am on Tuesday 15 September, Enniskillen RNLI’s inshore lifeboat, John and Jean Lewis, was launched at the request of Belfast Coastguard, following a report that a narrow boat had run aground on Lower Lough Erne.

Carrybridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat, Douglas, Euan & Kay Richards, was also requested to launch by Belfast Coastguard at 12.06pm to provide additional assistance with the rescue.

Weather was cloudy with a light south-westerly wind
Due to the position of the narrow boat, two volunteer crew members were dropped off and made their way on foot to the casualty vessel and found the passengers and a dog onboard to be safe and well. The crew and the dog onboard the narrow boat were evacuated from the vessel and brought ashore. The causalities and two of the crew were then taken by road from the area to Castle Archdale where they met other RNLI crew and members of Lough Erne Coastguard.

Due to the positioning of the barge and the surrounding environment it was deemed safer to leave the vessel in its location. The volunteer crew and lifeboat returned to station.

Speaking following the call out, Enniskillen RNLI Helm, Stephen Ingram, said: “The passenger did the right thing by contacting the Coastguard. We were happy to assist. Thank you to those involved, including Carrybridge RNLI and Lough Erne Coastguard, who assisted during the call out.”
