RNLI Jersey volunteers to feature in upcoming episode of Saving Lives at Sea

Two rescues by St Catherine's lifeboat station were featured in Series 4, some 7 years ago. However, RNLI Jersey has not featured in BBC 2's long-running series since then.

The BBC listing for Saving Lives at Sea on Tuesday 15 September confirms that RNLI Jersey will feature in that episode. Whilst details of upcoming episodes are not released until a few weeks before they are aired, the Saving Lives at Sea production team has indicated that RNLI Jersey's St Helier lifeboat station will likely feature more than once this season and so the crew are eagerly awaiting details of the upcoming episodes.

RNLI Jersey has over 50 seagoing volunteers across the two lifeboat stations at St Helier and St Catherine's, with further volunteers providing operational support. Crew are required to train to RNLI's rigorous standards in order to be assessed for the various roles which they hold, from basic crew on the inshore and all-weather lifeboats, through to specialised roles such as navigator, mechanic, helm or Coxswain. Crew are also trained in casualty care specific to the scenarios they will encounter during rescues, as will become apparent in the upcoming episode of Saving Lives at Sea.

RNLI Jersey's St Helier Lifeboat Operations Manager, Nigel Sweeny MBE, said:

"Our crew have helmet and boat cameras which allow us to record exercises and shouts, which can help with training and post-incident debriefs. One of the nice by-products is that we sometimes get footage which we can share with the Saving Lives at Sea team. It's always exciting to see our volunteer crew recognised for their work and we are all looking forward to this particular episode."

The Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Jeremy Kyd KBE, commented:

"The crews at RNLI Jersey spend countless hours training to save lives at sea, and it will be fantastic to see how that training is put into practice through the unique viewpoint of their helmet cameras.
