Scarborough RNLI volunteers achieve Tier 2 pass out on all-weather lifeboat
Scarborough RNLI volunteers Dan and Jess have successfully achieved their Tier 2 pass outs on the station's Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat (ALB), following months of intensive training and assessment.
The milestone is especially significant for Jess, who becomes the first female crew member in the history of Scarborough Lifeboat Station to achieve a Tier 2 pass out on the station's all-weather lifeboat.
A crew pass out is awarded when a volunteer demonstrates full proficiency in specific operational roles following extensive practical training, written assessments and scenario-based exercises. Achieving a pass out confirms that the crew member is qualified to undertake that role as part of the lifeboat crew.
To reach Tier 2 standard, both Dan and Jess successfully completed a comprehensive suite of competencies required to operate as core members of the Shannon class all-weather lifeboat crew. These include navigation support, towing operations, anchoring procedures, onboard safety and emergency responses, and vessel handling skills.
The qualification represents a significant commitment, requiring many hours at sea, classroom-based instruction and home learning. It reflects not only the high standards expected of RNLI volunteer crews, but also the dedication and professionalism shown by Dan and Jess throughout their training.
Their achievement strengthens the station's operational capability and ensures Scarborough RNLI continues to provide a first-class lifesaving service along the Yorkshire coast.
Scarborough RNLI Coxswain Lee said: 'Passing Tier 2 is a major achievement and both Dan and Jess should be extremely proud of what they have accomplished. The amount of time, effort and dedication required is considerable. Jess also making station history as our first female Tier 2 crew member is a fantastic achievement for both her and the station. We congratulate them both and look forward to seeing them continue to develop their skills as part of our all-weather lifeboat crew.'
