Bangor RNLI volunteers launch lifeboat twice in one hour
Bangor RNLI volunteers have had a busy evening responding to requests to attend to boats in distress this evening (Tuesday 26 May).
At 6:00pm Bangor RNLI’s Atlantic B class Ruby Robinson was requested by the Coastguard to attend a small yacht stranded on the rocks just outside Bangor Marina at Picki Park.
The Coastguard was on hand to support the crew. But as the crew of the boat had made it safely back onto shore it was decided that no further action was needed.
Just as the crew were washing down the lifeboat and making her ready for future shouts the second call came in at 6.30pm.
The Coastguard requested that the lifeboat investigate a Mayday call from a 15ft boat with two people on board with double engine failure. On arrival at the scene the crew noticed the boat was being blown into the shipping lane on Belfast Loch.
The crew assessed the situation, and it was decided that the safest option was to set up a tow and take the boat to Whitehead. There were two people on board and they were very thankful for the support given from the RNLI.
The volunteer crew were stood down by HM Coastguard and returned to the station where the lifeboat was washed down and made ready for service.
Launch Authority David Eccles wanted to thank all of the volunteers in attendance.
