As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2026, we take a look back at the role women have played in shaping the RNLI.

In 1838, Grace Darling received a gallantry award for her rescue of survivors from the steamship Forfarshire and become the first of many women to be recognised for their role in the RNLI.

For over a century, women played a pivotal role in the launch and recovery of lifeboats, and at stations like Dungeness the ‘Lady Launchers’ dragged the heavy equipment across the beach until as recently as 1977.

Here at Calshot RNLI, we are proud to have our women following in the footsteps of those that have volunteered to help the RNLI achieve its mission to Save Lives At Sea across the 202-year history of the organisation.

From Carolyn, who along with her husband runs our shop, Trish, our Admin Officer, Diane, Launch Authority (and former Boat Crew and Lifeboat Operations Manager), Kelley and Ros, Boat Crew and Sarah, Shore Crew to the extended team of fundraisers, without their efforts, we would not be able to provide the service to the local community.

Ladies, we salute you and thank you for being who you are and your contribution to Calshot RNLI.
