Porthdinllaen RNLI Tasked to Assist Stricken Yacht
Porthdinllaen RNLI's all-weather lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard to assist a yacht approximately six miles south-west of Aberffraw.
The yacht, with two people on board, had issued a Pan-Pan call requesting assistance after its propeller had become entangled. Launching into calm seas at 5:05pm on Saturday, with a full crew of volunteer lifeboat personnel on board, the Tamar-class lifeboat made best speed towards the vessel's location.
While en route, further information was received indicating that the entanglement had left the yacht unable to manoeuvre under its own power and had also made steering difficult.
Upon arrival, the situation was assessed and Coxswain Caryl Thomas determined that the safest course of action was to tow the stricken vessel back to Porthdinllaen Harbour. A towline was passed to the yacht’s crew and, once securely established, the lifeboat commenced the tow.
After arriving safely at Porthdinllaen, the yacht was placed on a secure mooring within the harbour. As the sailors were happy to remain on board their vessel, the lifeboat was released from its duties and returned to station.
Following refuelling and a full washdown, the lifeboat was made ready for service again by 10:20pm.
