Beaumaris RNLI tasked to yacht aground on a sandbar in the Menai Strait.
At 12.46 pm on Saturday 17 January 2026 the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a crew assemble page from HM Coastguard relating to a yacht reported to have grounded on a sandbar bar at Traeth Gwyllt in the Menai Strait.
The Mobile Coastguard team from Llandwrog had also been tasked to the incident.
The lifeboat volunteers being asked to undertake a welfare check on the occupants of the vessel as no response was being received on VHF radio or mobile phone.
Once on scene a crew member of the lifeboat went ashore on the sandbar and established that owner of the craft was the sole occupant. He had deliberately allowed the vessel to settle on the sandbar so he could examine the hull.
He was asked to contact the coastguard on the yacht VHF radio. whilst the lifeboat volunteer returned to the lifeboat. By this time having spoken to the owner of the vessel the Coastguard had released the lifeboat to return to her station.
The lifeboat arrived back at 1.59 pm being refuelled and made ready for the next service call by 2.35 pm
A RNLI spokesperson said: ‘Please advise H.M. Coastguard if you intend to allow your vessel to settle on a sandbar and have your VHF radio switched on and monitored so that they are fully aware of the situation.’.
