Penlee RNLI launch to persons cut off by the tide

Penlee RNLI were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard at 4pm on 29 August to assist persons cut off by the tide at Kynance Cove.

Both lifeboats were dispatched; the all-weather Severn Class Ivan Ellen under the command of Coxswain Amy Smith, Mechanic Andrew Wood and their crew of RNLI volunteers and the inshore Atlantic 85 Mollie and Ivor Dent under the command of Will Treneer and two further RNLI volunteers.
Upon arrival at Kynance Cove the inshore lifeboat was joined by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924. The casualties were reported to have made it safely to the top of the cliff.
Ivan Ellen was re-tasked while en route upon receiving a report of another 5 persons cut off by the tide at Chapel Rock. Upon arrival they launched the Y-boat but the Coastguard Helicopter became the safest option of extraction. The helicopter winched the five persons and transferred them to Coastguard teams on shore.
Both boats were stood down, returned to Newlyn and prepared for the next task.
This incident occurred during Penlee RNLI’s annual lifeboat open weekend. Visitors would have witnessed the procedures as our teams responded to the Coastguard’s requests.
