Montrose RNLI celebrates double Launch Authority pass-out
The station is proud to announce a significant milestone with the successful pass-out of two new Launch Authorities, David Wilson and Kirk Urquhart. This achievement marks an important step forward in ensuring the station always maintains the required operational cover.
Launch Authorities play a critical role in station operations. They are responsible for authorising and overseeing launches, ensuring that all safety, procedural, and operational standards are met before crews launch the lifeboats. Maintaining a strong and capable pool of Launch Authorities is essential to sustaining rapid response capability and safeguarding both volunteers and those in need of assistance.
The addition of David and Kirk further strengthens this capability, building resilience within the station and ensuring continuity of service. Their pass-out, combined with the recent pass-out of Graeme Ewen in November 2025, represents a continued investment in the operational readiness of the station.
Both volunteers joined as Launch Authorities in January of this year and have shown excellent commitment to the role, working hard over recent months to develop their knowledge and readiness in preparation for assessment. They were formally assessed on the evening of Monday 6th April, where both successfully passed out as Launch Authorities.
David Wilson joined bringing with him 15 years of experience in the offshore oil and gas industry, where he currently serves as an Operations Director specialising in rig decommissioning. Having relocated from Aberdeen in 2022, David was keen to contribute to a cause he had long admired. His leadership experience and ability to make decisions under pressure have proved to be important skills throughout his training as Launch Authority.
Kirk Urquhart recently retired after 42 years of working in the pharmaceutical and oil and gas industries. With more free time, Kirk was keen to give back to the community and volunteer with a truly meaningful charity. Having briefly been part of the crew many years ago, he was inspired by the dedication and commitment shown by volunteers - much of which often goes unseen. He was particularly drawn to the Launch Authority role when it was advertised, recognising the vital contribution it makes to station operations.
Alex Purves, Coastal Lifeboat Trainer, who conducted the assessment, said:
“David and Kirk have both put in a great deal of effort to reach this stage, and that came through during their assessment. They demonstrated an excellent level of understanding and sound decision-making throughout. Their commitment to the role is clear, and their success is a real boost for the station. Congratulations to them both on successfully passing.”
Jim Candy, Lifeboat Operations Manager, added:
“I’d like to personally thank David and Kirk for the hard work and dedication they’ve shown over the past few months. Becoming a Launch Authority is a significant responsibility, and both have approached it with real commitment. Congratulations to them both on passing out - it’s a fantastic achievement and a real strengthening of the station’s operational capability.”
The station congratulates David and Kirk on their achievement and looks forward to their continued contribution in this key role. Their dedication, alongside that of the wider team, ensures the station remains ready to respond whenever needed.
