Mumbles RNLI raft race returns for 40th year

Lifeboats News Release

First held in the 1980s, the raft race has become a well‑known part of the Mumbles calendar, bringing the community together to raise money for the RNLI, all while enjoying a fun day by the sea.

The race will take place at 12 pm, July 19th, starting and finishing at Knab Rock. Teams from across South Wales will build and race their own rafts, with plenty of wacky designs and outfits on the water.

Although last year’s event was unable to go ahead due to the weather, organisers say plans for 2026 have been shaped by previous experience and the event is expected to be bigger and better for this milestone year!

At the last event held, over £10,000 was raised, and this year organisers are hoping for even more to support the charity’s lifesaving work. There will be singing from our choir, water safety advice, and a demonstration, where you can see the lifeboats up close, in action.

There will also be shoreside entertainment, making it a great day out for families and spectators. The race can be viewed along the brand new Mumbles Prom, with clear views along the bay.

Tony Bowen, Mumbles RNLI crew member and raft race organiser, said:

‘The raft race is a big part of Mumbles. It’s a great day where people get together, laugh and support the RNLI. Reaching 40 years is a real milestone, and every pound raised helps us carry on saving lives at sea.’

A previous winner said:

‘We had a brilliant day taking part. It’s great fun, and it’s all for a good cause. I definitely encourage anyone thinking about it to give it a go.’

The race is organised by the MLCA (Mumbles Lifeboat Crew Association), with support from The Mumbles RNLI, Mumbles Community Council and local volunteers.
